I attended a service in the cathedral. It was moving, and yet it seemed too simple. There were many symbols of reconciliation in the new cathedral, but they did not speak to me as profoundly as I had expected. Something was missing. Then I found a poster titled ‘Conflict and Peace in Coventry today’. It directed the attention to today’s conflicts. There is no doubt that many people are still deeply affected by the trauma of German atrocities, often in the second and third generation, especially within the Jewish community. However, almost seventy years later reconciliation across ruins and dead soldiers and civilians does not seem so difficult any more. The poster mentions religious conflicts and refugees. Can we extend peace and reconciliation to immigrants from Eastern Europe, to refugees, asylum seekers and to other faith communities and offer them a warm welcome? Can we make peace with nature? These are borders that a small tractor cannot cross, only we humans with compassion and warm hearts. What a challenge!
Ich nahm an einem Gottesdienst in der Kathedrale teil. Er war ergreifend, und doch schien alles zu einfach zu sein. Die Kathedrale enthält viele Symbole der Versöhnung, aber diese sprachen mich nicht so tief an, wie ich erwartet hatte. Es fehlte etwas. Dann fand ich das Plakat ‚Konflikt und Frieden in Coventry heute’. Es wies mich in die Richtung auf heutige Auseinandersetzungen. Zweifellos sind auch heute noch viele Menschen von dem Trauma deutscher Gräueltaten tief gezeichnet, oft in der zweiten und dritten Generation und insbesonders in der jüdischen Gemeinde. Und doch scheint nach fast siebzig Jahren die Versöhnung über Ruinen und tote Soldaten und Zivilisten hinweg nicht mehr so schwierig. Das Plakat erwähnt religiöse Konflikte und Flüchtlinge. Ob wir wohl Frieden und Versöhnung auf Einwanderer aus Osteuropa, auf Flüchtlinge, auf Asylsuchende und auf andere Glaubensgemeinschaften ausweiten können und wir sie herzlich willkommen heißen? Und wie steht es mit dem Frieden mit der Natur? Es gibt Grenzen, die ein kleiner Traktor nicht überqueren kann, nur wir Menschen sind dazu fähig mit unserem Mitgefühl und der Wärme unserer Herzen. Was für eine Herausforderung!
