This afternoon I crossed the border from England to Wales. I had intended to take a photo of the welcoming to Wales sign, but it was so small and derelict that I did not find it worth the trouble. Now here is a short Geography lesson for my German readers: Never say Wales in England! England and Wales are two separate nations and in this context borders are important. The United Kingdom is made up of four nations: England, Scotland (until September this year anyway), Wales and Northern Ireland. They all have a significant degree of independence. The relationship between England and the other three nations has been and still is strained at times. Maybe I will need to cross the borders on my tractor a few more times, I wonder if this might help to create a friendlier relationship.
Heute Nachmittag fuhr ich über die Grenze von England nach Wales. Ich hatte vorgehabt, ein Foto des Willkommensschildes zu machen, aber es war so klein und heruntergekommen, dass es nicht der Mühe Wert war. Hier ist nun eine kurze Geographielektion für meine deutschen Leser. Sagt nie ‚Wales in England’! Wales und England sind zwei getrennte Nationen. Das Vereinigte Königreich setzt sich aus vier Nationen zusammen: England, Schottland (wenigstens noch bis September, wenn die Schotten über ihre Unabhängigkeit abstimmen), Wales und Nordirland. Alle haben einen beachtlichen Grad an Unabhängigkeit. Die Beziehung zwischen England und den anderen drei Nationen war und ist gelegentlich angespannt. Vielleicht muss ich ja mit meinem Traktor noch ein paar Mal über die Grenzen fahren. Es kann doch sein, dass dies dazu beiträgt, eine freundlichere Beziehung herzustellen.
