During my journey over the past 6 days I have been criss-crossing the Rhine river on a number of occasions and it has been my companion ever since I first crossed it on 7th June. Tomorrow I will be leaving the Rhine valley. For me the Rhine has always been a touch of awe-inspiring. It is majestic, the Rhine valley is in many places cut deep with surrounding rocks and there are numerous castles and ruins. In the Nibelungenlied the Rhine plays an important role with Worms the centre of the Burgundian Court. Interestingly, the Rhine in German is referred to as masculine while the Danube is considered feminine. I do not know why this is. In Germany the Rhine is sometimes called the German river and it has the addition Vater Rhein (Father Rhine). I was wondering where these attributes came from. An internet search took me to the website of the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Centre for Political Education) The following draws on information that I obtained from there.
The discussion on the 'nationality' of the Rhine started in 1792 when French troops under Napoleon occupied the area on the left side of the River, the so-called Rhineland. In protest German poets declared the Rhine as 'Germany's River but not Germany's Border'. I already mentioned the song Watch on the Rhine of 1840. In contrast the French saw the Rhine as their natural border, la frontière naturelle. In the Congress of Vienna in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon the Rhineland fell to Prussia, but conflicts flared up again when France demanded a revision in 1840. The German occupation of Alsace and Lorraine in 1871 was followed by the French occupation of the Rhineland following the Treaty of Versaille. After heavy resistance of the population French occupation ended in 1930. The Rhineland remained a demilitarised zone until Hitler marched into this zone in 1936. Today the Rhine river is very much a European river and the most important waterway in Europe.

Interessanterweise wird im Deutschen der Rhein als männlich angesehen, während die Donau grammatikalisch weiblich ist. Den Grund dafür kenne ich nicht. In Deutschland wird der Rhein manchmal als 'der deutsche Fluss' bezeichnet und er hat den Zusatz 'Vater' Rhein. Ich war neugierig, wo diese Zuschreibungen herkamen. Im Wiener Kongress 1815 nach der Niederlage Napoleons wurde das Rheinland Preussen zugeschlagen, aber Konflkte loderten 1840 wieder auf, als Frankreich eine Revision verlangte. Der deutschen Besetzung von Elsaß und Lothringen 1871 folgte die französiche Besatzung des Rheinlandes nach dem Vertrag von Versailles. Nach heftigem Widerstand der Bevölkerung endete die französische Besatzung 1930. Das Rheinland blieb jedoch eine entmilitarisierte Zone bis Hitler 1936 dort einmarschierte. Heute ist der Rhein überwiegend ein europäischer Fluss und er ist die bedeutends Wasserstrasse in Europa.
